A decision-tree-based model for evaluating the thermal comfort of horses Scientia Agricola
Maia,Ana Paula de Assis; Oliveira,Stanley Robson de Medeiros; Moura,Daniella Jorge de; Sarubbi,Juliana; Vercellino,Rimena do Amaral; Medeiros,Brenda Batista Lemos; Griska,Paulo Roberto.
Thermal comfort is of great importance in preserving body temperature homeostasis during thermal stress conditions. Although the thermal comfort of horses has been widely studied, there is no report of its relationship with surface temperature (T S). This study aimed to assess the potential of data mining techniques as a tool to associate surface temperature with thermal comfort of horses. T S was obtained using infrared thermography image processing. Physiological and environmental variables were used to define the predicted class, which classified thermal comfort as "comfort" and "discomfort". The variables of armpit, croup, breast and groin T S of horses and the predicted classes were then subjected to a machine learning process. All variables in the...

Broiler surface temperature distribution of 42 day old chickens Scientia Agricola
Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Romanini,Carlos Eduardo Bites; Neves,Diego Pereira; Nascimento,Guilherme Rodrigues do; Vercellino,Rimena do Amaral.
Broiler chickens in Brazil are generally reared from 1 to 42 days when they are exposed to procedures such as fasting, harvesting, crating and transport to slaughter. Maintaining homeostasis is of great importance for broiler survival under harsh environment especially prior to slaughter. Heat loss varies in the distinct parts of the body during the growth period, and it is related to the air temperature of the environment and to the amount of feather covering. This research aimed to study the surface temperature distribution using infrared thermographic image processing to characterize 42 day old broiler chicken surface temperature prior to slaughter. Broilers were reared for 42 days and prior to harvest and transport to slaughter the infrared surface...

Effect of chamomile extract on the welfare of laying Japanese quail R. Bras. Zootec.
Tenório,Karine Isabela; Sgavioli,Sarah; Roriz,Beatriz Cardoso; Ayala,Cristina Martinez; Santos,Wellington dos; Rodrigues,Paulo Henrique Mazza; Almeida,Vitor Rosa de; Garcia,Rodrigo Garófallo.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of chamomile extract on Japanese quail on their performance, animal behavior, tonic immobility, body injuries, and surface temperature. The trial was conducted using 108 quail distributed in a completely randomized experimental design, with three treatments (0, 2.5, and 5.0 g chamomile/kg of feed), six replicates, and six birds per treatment, evaluated in six measures repeated in time (14, 28, 42, 56, 70, and 84 days of trial). The inclusion of chamomile presented a quadratic effect on sitting behavior, estimating the inclusion of 1.8 g chamomile/kg to maximize this behavior. There was a decreasing linear effect for aggressive pecking, that is, the higher the inclusion of chamomile in the...

ESTIMATION OF RESPIRATORY FREQUENCY AND RECTAL TEMPERATURE ON PIGS IN HEAT STRESS BY FUZZY LOGIC REA
Oliveira,Rodrigo F. de; Ferreira,Rony A.; Abreu,Lucas H. P.; Yanagi Júnior,Tadayuki; Lourençoni,Dian.
ABSTRACT Physiological parameters such as respiratory frequency and rectal temperature stand out as indicators for heat stress in pigs, however, requiring time and labor for measurements. The possibility of using infrared thermography associated with prediction systems of these physiological variables can help in decision making, allowing greater welfare and productivity of the animals. With this objective, an experiment was carried out with growing pigs submitted to acute and chronic heat stress, working with a thermoneutrality temperature (22° C) and heat stress (34° C). The results were used for the development of a fuzzy model using as input variables: air dry bulb temperature (°C), average surface temperature (°C) and, as output variables: respiratory...

Heat loss in one day old pullets inside a hatchery REA
Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Graciano,Daniela E.; Garcia,Rodrigo G.; Santana,Mayara R. de; Neves,Diego P..
After hatching, pullets are transported to brooding area and vaccinated. One day old chicks have not already developed thermoregulation ability; thus, brooding temperature variations may affect pullet quality leading to broiler meat production losses. This research aimed to calculate sensible heat loss in one day old pullets in hatching area and vaccination room. Ten one day old pullets were randomly selected from hatching area of a commercial hatchery. Infrared images were used to calculate bird surface temperature. Exposure areas for the two conditions were quantified, and both air temperature and wind speed was recorded. Total sensible heat loss was calculated as heat loss by radiation plus heat loss by convection. It was found that heat transfer occurs...

PERFORMANCE OF FUZZY INFERENCE SYSTEMS TO PREDICT THE SURFACE TEMPERATURE OF BROILER CHICKENS REA
Bahuti,Marcelo; Abreu,Lucas H. P.; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Lima,Renato R. de; Campos,Alessandro T..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to compare fuzzy systems with different configurations to predict the surface temperature (ts) of broiler chickens subjected to different intensities and durations of thermal challenges in the second week of life. Data on the ts of broiler chickens aged 8 to 11 days were acquired by infrared thermography and subjected to combinations of four dry-bulb temperatures (tdb) (24, 27, 30, and 33 °C) and four durations of thermal challenges (DTC) (1, 2, 3, or 4 days). The input variables of the fuzzy systems were tdb and DTC, and the output variable was ts. The Mamdani inference method involving five defuzzification methods [center of gravity (centroid), bisector of the area (bisector), largest of maximum (lom), middle of maximum (mom),...

Productive, Qualitative, and Physiological Aspects of Layer Hens Fed with Propolis Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Belloni,M; Almeida Paz,ICL; Nääs,IA; Alves,MCF; Garcia,RG; Caldara,FR; Seno,LO.
ABSTRACT Laying hens reared under tropical conditions are usually under heat stress. Propolis is known for its pharmaceutical properties, such as increasing cell tolerance to hyperthermia, because of its antioxidants effects. This study aimed at evaluating the influence of different dietary propolis inclusion levels on the performance, egg quality, and bird surface temperature of layers. In this experiment 120 55-wk-old Isa Brown(r) layers were distributed according to a completely randomized experimental design into four treatments (0, 1, 2 and 3% dietary propolis inclusion levels), with three replicates of ten birds each. Performance and egg quality parameters, and birds' surface temperature were evaluated. Egg production, egg mass, feed intake, and feed...

Surface temperature distribution in broiler houses Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Baracho,MS; Nääs,IA; Nascimento,GR; Cassiano,JA; Oliveira,KR.
In the Brazilian meat production scenario broiler production is the most dynamic segment. Despite of the knowledge generated in the poultry production chain, there are still important gaps on Brazilian rearing conditions as housing is different from other countries. This research study aimed at analyzing the variation in bird skin surface as function of heat distribution inside broiler houses. A broiler house was virtually divided into nine sectors and measurements were made during the first four weeks of the grow-out in a commercial broiler farm in the region of Rio Claro, São Paulo, Brazil. Rearing ambient temperature and relative humidity, as well as light intensity and air velocity, were recorded in the geometric center of each virtual sector to...

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of fur length in the evaluation of knees temperature in healthy dogs, using infrared thermography. This is a non-invasive diagnosis that is able to assess the microcirculation of the internal skin. Changes in temperature reflect from inflammatory reactions and vascular infarction to neurological disorders. Knees of 30 healthy dogs were analyzed, with up to 11 pounds of weight, screened by clinical examination and radiographic examination. Group A, consisting of 13 dogs with short fur, with 26 knees evaluated in total. Group B included animals with long fur, consisting of 17 animals, with 29 knees evaluated in total. The average temperatures of the cranial, lateral, caudal and medial sides of...
